The Metamorphosis of Osdorp.

Love this beautiful animation/film created by the guy’s of +1 Amsterdam. Not completely new techniques and it has a very MTV-ish feel to it, but still … very nicely executed.

The city district Amsterdam Osdorp recently merged with Slotervaart and Geuzenveld-Slotermeer and was given the name Amsterdam Nieuw-West. This change also meant the end of 20 years of restructuring urbanized areas. To celebrate everything achieved, a book was published. ‘The Metamorphosis of Osdorp’ gives an overview of the architectural highlights. PlusOne was asked to create the video.

Bottled water, the new oil #2

I’ve reported about the paradox of bottled water before in the post Bottled water, the new oil.
There is something strange about water in a bottle. You have the feeling to be buying a pure and clean ’source’ product, which is healthier and cleaner than ordinary tap water. But the opposite is the truth. Here’s 2 other examples explaining why bottled water is in fact a environmental disaster. (If watching the video consumes too much time for you, just stick to the info graphic, it basically tells the same story).
This film is from the creators of ‘the story of stuff‘, also a very nice film that’ll make you think about how we produce and consume.

The Story of Bottled Water, was released on March 22, 2010 on World Water Day

CK augmented reality

Here’s an augmented reality web campaign of  Calvin Klein (I think it was in collaboration with GQ magazine). And I’ve tried it and it worked. It’s a little ‘blocky’ and it’s clearly a technology in progress. Watch the demo video and you get the idea. Or try it out you’re self, the website will explain you how. You also gonna need a webcam.

A film made by (over) 20 filmmakers

COALITION OF THE WILLING is a web-based film made by a network of over 20 collaborating artists and filmmakers from around the world. Started in February the film is being released in 6 staggered  waves 2 weeks apart, with 4-5 sections up-loaded in each wave. The releases can be followed on Twitter and Facebook and. The result can be watched on this website. Coalition of the Willing is an, as the creators cal it, ‘animated film about an online war against global warming in a post-Copenhagen world.’
Good initiative with an interesting visual outcome.

The packaging = the product

I’m always fascinated by smart packaging solutions. See the other stories I’ve written about that (this, this and this one). Packaging is usually one of the reasons someone buys the product, so it’s not something you can do without. The downside is the environmental issue. This is one of those nice example of how the packaging is (part of) the product itself, designed by Knoend.

I’m not the only one who liked the idea, because it won of a Bronze International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) 2008.

Bottled water, the new oil

I recently wrote about the food industry’s own ‘Inconvenient Truth’; the film Food inc.
It seems to be a trend to make for each industry it’s own ‘Inconvenient Truth’. Now the water industry has also one: Tapped. And the word “industry” is the catch here.

There is something strange about bottled water. You have the feeling to be buying a pure and clean ‘source’ product, which is healthier and cleaner than ordinary tap water. But the opposite is the truth. The water itself is not unhealthy, though in many cases, not the promised crystal clear mountain water is delivered, but simply (filtered) tap water. The problem lies in the bottles. All 29 billion of them. Per year. In the US alone.

The paradox is that the purest and most necessary product, is becoming one of the greatest environmental threat at the moment. The damaging influence of transportation and, especially, the PAT bottle has on our health and the environment is tremendous. It stands in no comparison to the product.

By now most of us known about the plastic-trash island, twice the size of the state of Texas and still growing, that’s floating in the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately the PAT bottles, holding the drinking water, could partly be held reasonable for it.

There is something else. Water is very necessary and vital, we can’t survive without it. So there’s many who have a great interest in having control of water. For whoever controls the water has the power and makes the profits. It’s like the oil industry. So if there are ‘water’ company’s who manage to convince us of the importance of bottled water and can convince us that tap water holds a risk factor, their influence will grow.

In the future we’ll probably see a shift from water as a public service to a (partly) privately held product. See the energy market as an example. But, there’s something you can do about it, filter clean tap water yourself.

Virgin flagship store on Times Square gone

Virginstore-NY

The world has changed, we know that. We don’t buy CD’s ennymore, instead we download our music to our computer and iPOD. This resulted in the famous Virgin flagship store on Times square to closdown. The rebel of the record industry of the 80′s has to make space for tenants more fitting for this century. (Or is the concept of a flagship store not profitable enough in economic harsh times?)
Parts have been rented out to Planet Hollywood and Forever 21. Would’nt the remaining space be fitting for an Apple store?

In the US, McDonalds came with an answer to the success of Starbuck: They’ve extended the brand with McCafé. And what better way to introduce the new product by letting people taste it for free? (only on Monday though)
